About the Cover
Cover: Image of gerbil cochlea freed of the surrounding bone. Bright stain represents immunofluorescence of the prestin-containing lateral membranes of outer hair cells. Prestin is the motor protein responsible for somatic motility of these cells. The motile response is thought to provide amplification in the cochlea and is the basis of the exquisite sensitivity and frequency selectivity of the mammalian hearing organ. See article by J. Zheng et al. (pp. 2987-2996).
