Kinesin tree regrown


Members of the kinesin motor family transport organelles and vesicles along microtubules and have essential roles in chromosome movement and spindle function. The completion of the genome sequences of humans and several model organisms has increased the number of known members of this family. In Cell Science at a Glance (see p. 3 + poster), Elise Dagenbach and Sharyn Endow therefore provide an updated version of the kinesin phylogenetic tree, including details of how previously unclassified kinesins can be assigned to different groups and analyses of the divergence in the conserved motifs evident in these motors.
