In the ducts of the major and minor ampullaceal glands of Araneus diadematus, special valves have been found which control the output of the dragline. Closure of the duct is achieved by inflation of the valve lips; opening is achieved by deflation. These valvular changes are brought about by groups of muscles attached to the duct.
