The cuticle of the scorpion, Buthus famulus, has been studied at the early postmoult stage. There is a distinct two-layered epicuticle, which is non-chitinous, and a procuticle consisting of a chitin/protein complex. Polyphenols, phenolase, and sulphur are present at this stage. Quinones and groups containing sulphur seem to play a part in the subsequent hardening of the cuticle.
