Nucleolar ribonucleoprotein (RNP) components of the chloragogen cells of normal untreated specimens of Tubifex tubifex (Müll) were found to be segregated, there being separate zones for each RNP species. There were external and internal zones, containing granular RNP, and a fibrillar zone located between them in which only filamentous RNP components were found. The innermost part of the nucleolus was formed by one or more vacuole-like structures which occasionally contained 350-Å granules of high electron opacity. In the vicinity of the nucleolus a spherical mass, called the ‘paranucleolar body’ and composed of densely packed granules and filaments, was constantly encountered.
